UPDATE REFLECTOR TO REFLECTOR 2 FULL
August 2019: Pitched Elemental at the Writer’s Digest Conference Pitch Slam event, 4/4 partial or full requests.October 2018: Started writing Elemental.September 2018: Attended IndieLAB conference by Writer’s Digest to figure out what being an indie author or freelance writer looks like.May 2018: Got fed up with fanfic drama and writing for free, so set up this website and my social media channels.January 2016: Got the idea for Elemental, made some notecards.I’ve already written at length about the decision to switch paths, but suffice to say it has actually been a three-year journey already ( Elemental was my 2018 NaNoWriMo project, the first one I’d done, and I started it in October 2018). Since I already had a business set up, I tested Bluebloods as a first step into self-publishing, liked it, and decided to pull Elemental from querying to self-publish. In January 2019, after five months of querying, I had my doubts about that path. I set up Benu Media to be a marketing consulting business, but I wanted to leave the door open for myself to publish as well. I’ve previously written about how in 2018 I had the usual big dream: to be picked up by an agent who would sell my book to a traditional publishing house.

The usual caveats apply: this is a reflection on my journey, and YMMV in applying any of it to yours. Today marks the beginning of my third year of business!Īs it happens, a major (BookBub Featured Deal) sale wrapped up yesterday, so it seemed like the perfect time to reflect on the journey and level-set for others considering the self-publishing path. One of the things I wished I’d seen starting out was more about numbers and time and money, so I’m trying to give one view into all that. The paperwork was approved on October 8, so that’s what I use as the business’s birthday. I set up Benu Media, my publishing imprint, in 2019.
